Safeguarding Training and Garda Vetting

Every IMAC instructor or coach is required to complete the Safeguarding Level 1 (Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness) Course before beginning their instructional duties.

This course can be taken with any authorised provider, and proof of completion must be submitted to the IMAC national children’s officer.
Each IMAC club must appoint a club children’s officer who is registered with IMAC. These officers must complete both the Safeguarding 1 and Safeguarding 2 (Club Children’s Officer) courses. Training for these courses can be undertaken with IMAC or any authorized provider.

However, if the Safeguarding 2 course is completed with a provider other than IMAC, the club children’s officer must attend the annual IMAC safeguarding forum to be recognised as an IMAC club children’s officer. This ensures the officer is fully informed about IMAC practices and has established a connection with the IMAC national children’s officer for any necessary liaison.

Garda Vetting

All IMAC instructors and assistant coaches are required to have an up-to-date IMAC Garda vetting. If a member's vetting expires, they must immediately cease all martial arts activities until new vetting is completed. Should the individual continue their involvement without current vetting, their club will automatically lose its IMAC membership and must reapply once the new vetting is in place.

Anyone holding a position within martial arts, including instructors, coaches, assistants, and volunteers, who will have regular interactions with young people or vulnerable adults, must undergo vetting through the National Vetting Bureau facilitated by the IMAC national children’s officer.

Vetting must be secured before the individual can start their role.

IMPORTANT: IMAC provides the vetting process exclusively for current members.
Therefore, only active IMAC members should request vetting through IMAC.

To arrange for vetting or re-vetting, club instructors should reach out to their IMAC advisory board representative to learn about the vetting procedures specific to their martial art advisory board.

IMAC coaches and instructors will receive an IMAC vetting certificate to be displayed for members.

Volunteers and class assistants will be given a letter confirming their vetting by IMAC. Vetting must be renewed every three years.

To avoid delays, IMAC advises that re-vetting applications be submitted no later than 2 and a half years after the previous vetting was issued.

The public can contact IMAC to verify the vetting status of any instructor or coach.
