Bobby O'Neill - Wexford Kung Fu and kickboxing Centre

Lau Gar Ireland was founded in 1977 under the direction of Master J. Yau when a team of black sash from the British Kung Fu association staged a series of demonstrations and set up clubs in Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Dublin.

The style we practice is Lau Gar Kuen an ancient system of Southern Chinese boxing. The purpose of our association is to teach martial arts in a progressive manner, which will teach self-discipline and self-confidence and lead to increased physical fitness and good health. Traditional values of Martial Arts; respect, discipline and good conduct are cornerstones of our philosophy.

The association caters for all age groups and abilities with special children’s classes. As well as traditional Kung Fu we also offer classes in Kickboxing, Self Defence and Tai Chi.

Bobby Lau Gar

The association has been involved in sports kickboxing for many years and is affiliated to KBI the national body for Kickboxing and IMAC the national governing body for martial arts. Due to the success of its members including several world champion fighters it has earned the reputation as one of the country’s top martial arts associations. The chief instructor is Bobby O’Neill. Bobby who started training in the first class in 1977 was awarded the position of Chief Instructor of the association by Master Yau in 1989.

He competed internationally as part of the Irish Kickboxing squad for over 10 years capturing two World Titles, WAKO and IAKSA as well as numerous international medals and 10 Irish national titles, making him the most successful Irish international competitor of that decade. Bobby was made a Guardian of Lau Gar Kung Fu several years ago. The title of Guardian is awarded to Lau Gar practitioners who have proven excellence and dedication over many years and who swear to promote, nurture and develop the Lau Gar style. Derek Dawson from Boyne Valley Lau Gar was also awarded this prestigious title a few years later in recognition of his many years of dedication to the style, his high personal standard and many international achievements.

Having two Guardians in the association is a great asset to the members and both our guardians as well as our instructors are constantly travelling and participating in seminars and workshops at home and abroad to continue their learning and to pass on their knowledge. Our members and instructors achievements over the years have been numerous and diverse, not only have we produced world champions and skilled practitioners of Martial Arts but we hope we have instilled self confidence, self discipline and self belief in many and contributed to the community in a positive manner.
